Four Continents: Men's Short Program

Nicholas Fernandez, AUS: 23.93 TES + 21.64 PCS -1.00 = 44.57
  • Triple toe + triple toe to open his program--he leans very far forward on the takeoff of his jumps
  • Triple salchow
  • Botched the entry to a flying spin and falls on his knees and does some choreo in place to fill the gap
  • Good double axel with a nice ride out on the landing
  • Decent stretch through his positions in the combination spin with ok centering and good speed
  • Some ice spray throughout the step sequence but he has a nice outside edge
  • Good speed and position in the flying camel spin with a nice catchfoot variation maintaining the speed
Maverick Eguia, PHI: 22.67 TES + 20.96 PCS -2.00 = 41.63 and into 2nd place
  • Triple flip +triple toe with a step out and a fall on the second jump
  • Good double axel right on the music with a nice transition out of it
  • Not a lot of height on the flying entry to the sit spin, needs more stretch through his leg, and not a lot of speed through the position change
  • Fall on the triple lutz
  • Nice camel position with a very good catchfoot position and a nice donut spin--great flexibility in his back
  • Good speed through his final spin but I'm not a fan of the bent over catchfoot position
Alex Kang Chan Kam, KOR: 28.56 TES + 23.56 PCS = 52.12 and into 1st place
  • Really nice triple toe + triple toe with great height and a nice correction after a tilted air position in the first jump
  • Nice triple lutz right on the music--possibly two footed
  • Nice tuck position in his sit spin with good centering and decent speed
  • Nice spread eagle into a double axel with good ice coverage but a scratchy landing
  • Super slow camel spin but a nice donut position
  • Not much content wise to this step sequence and I'd like to see him stretch through his free legs more
  • A lot of speed in the sit spin but it seems a little wild and he loses his centering
Harry Hau Yin Lee, HKG: 21.47 TES + 20.53 PCS = 42.00 and into 3rd place
  • Nice opening triple lutz
  • He is very long limbed and expressive on the ice and it's a shame that is blue and white ombre outfit makes him blend completely into the ice and boards
  • Triple salchow + double toe with no flow coming out of the second jump
  • Nice positions in the sit spin
  • Good double axel but the landings on his jumps seem choppy
  • Very nice use of his arms and upper body throughout the step sequence but he could have more flow over the ice and be less stiff through his knees
  • Flying camel spin with an ok position and a bit of an awkward exit
  • He takes a minute to center the sit spin but some nice variations
Hwan-Jin Kim, KOR: 15.73 TES + 21.22 PCS = 36.95 and into 5th place
  • Popped his opening jump but tacks on the double toe
  • Popped the flip and two footed the landing and takes a minute to get back into the program
  • A little sideways in the camel and scratch through the change of foot into the triangle position
  • This footwork is nicely choreographed and he's giving it some attack which is nice to see but I'd like to see him perform it more and really sell it
  • Really fought for the landing on that double axel good for him
  • He needs to point more through his foot on the camel spin
  • Flying sit spin with a lot of traveling and no speed by the end
Wun-Chang Shih, TPE: 17.80 TES + 20.47 PCS -1.00 = 37.27 and into 5th place
  • He has really nice flow and choreography through this opening sequence
  • Didn't quite get his pick in for the toe and doubles it and puts his hands down
  • Very hesitant going into the triple loop and falls
  • Not a lot of height on the double axel but he gets it donw
  • A little crooked on the camel spin but good speed
  • Really moving a lot through this sit spin sequence with no centering at all
  • Trips and puts a hand down on some turns in his step sequence
  • Really pitched forward and a bent supporting leg in the camel section of his combination spin
Luiz Manella, BRA: 27.14 TES + 23.03 PCS = 50.17 and into 2nd place
  • Love that he's skating to Patrick Chan's musing and even includes the Chan cabriole
  • Good triple lutz
  • Triple loop + double toe very scratchy
  • Double axel
  • Good picking up speed through the catchfoot variation in his camel spin
  • Really slow combo spin and even in the scratch position and it looks like he loses his balance
  • Picks up some speed in the sit spin through the position change
Jordan Ju, TPE: 27.81 TES + 22.68 PCS -1.00 = 49.49 and into 3rd place
  • He seems to just be going through the motions in this opening instead of really committing to this choreography
  • Stepped out of the triple flip + triple toe
  • Really deep entry to the triple lutz and a fall
  • Nice low, stretched out sit spin position
  • Nice spread eagle into a solid double axel
  • Camel, into sit change of foot into broken leg sit spin ending with an upright spin
  • Decent step sequence with a lot of body movement but he could push through it more and get more ice coverage
  • Good speed on the final flying spin
Kevin Alves, BRA: 25.40 TES + 23.56 PCS -1.00 = 47.96 and into 4th place
  • Nice double axel right on the music with good flow out of the jump
  • Fall on the triple lutz--looked ok in the air
  • Triple flip + double toe really off but hangs on to it
  • Very slot and not a great position in the camel catchfoot
  • He gets a lot of ice coverage in his step sequence, but not a lot of difficult in it
  • Looks like he's starting to lose steam going into his sit spin; nice broken leg variation
  • Good camel position into a good sit spin and a nice scratch spin
Min-Seok Kim, KOR: 24.64 TES + 25.75 PCS -1.00 = 49.39 and into 4th place
  • Not sure how a red shirt and green pants equals Pirates of the Caribbean but here we go
  • Triple axel
  • Fall on the triple loop
  • Double flip--very close to the boards
  • Those boot covers make it very evident that he's not pointing his foot in that sit spin
  • Good camel position into a nice catchfoot upright spin but losing speed through the sit spin
  • Nice one foot section in his footwork with good ice coverage and he's really attacking this choreography but there's not a lot of upper body movement
  • Good donut position in his camel spin
Brendan Kerry, AUS: 24.91 TES + 23.10 PCS -1.00 = 47.01 and into 6th place
  • Good triple flip + triple toe to open his program
  • Takes a spill on some transition steps between jumps
  • Good recovery with the double axel
  • Good speed through the camel spin
  • Double lutz with a step out
  • Seems a little slow and choppy on his edges going through the footwork--seems to be running out of steam through the one foot section
  • Great speed through his combo spin, but some loss of centering and awkward changes of position
Jeremy Ten, CAN: 31.23 TES + 30.14 PCS = 61.37 and into 1st place
  • Triple axel step out
  • Step out and hand down on the triple lutz
  • Nice sit spin position with a nice back tuck and a good change of leg into a good stretched out position
  • Triple loop + double toe a little tight but nicely done
  • Good speed through the camel spin with a nice twisted variation and a good catch foot
  • Nice movement throughout his step sequence and a good commitment to his choreography with nice timing to the music
  • Good camel into a nice fast sit spin with a really interesting twist variation and ending with a scratch spin
Christopher Caluza, PHI: 30.37 TES + 27.65 PCS = 58.02 and into 2nd place
  • Nice spread eagle into a double axel
  • Triple lutz + triple toe
  • Good triple loop
  • Nice height on his leg in the camel position with good speed through the catch foot
  • The speed and position in his camel are to die for with nice flexibility through the upright catchfoot spin
  • Interesting to see this step sequence to a different part of the music in Assassin's Tango--showing a bit of a softer side and having more fun with it
  • Nice twisted sit position in his final spin
Mark Webster, AUS: 26.27 TES + 24.61 PCS = 50.88 and into 4th place
  • Had to reboot my computer to fix a jumpy feed so I missed this program
Jinlin Guan, CHN: 36.00 TES + 30.36 PCS = 66.36 and into 1st place
  • Nice triple flip + triple toe
  • Double axel
  • Nice speed and positions in his camel spin
  • Really nice stretched out sit spin position with good toe point
  • Good triple lutz
  • Love the attack and fire behind this step sequence, great coverage, nice edges and I like that he's performing it as well--running a bit low on steam by the end though
  • Good sit positions in the final spin with nice variations
Misha Ge, UZB: 32.99 TES + 31.50 PCS = 64.49 and into 2nd place
  • Opens with a triple axel
  • Nice triple flip + triple toe
  • Triple lutz
  • Nice catch foot position in his camel spin with decent speed
  • Nice footwork sequence, quiet but lots of edgework
Adam Rippon, USA: 39.79 TES + 36.13 PCS -1.00 = 74.92 and into 1st place
  • Great opening triple flip + triple toe
  • A little off on the air in the triple axel but he fights for the landing
  • Nice twisted sit spin variation with good speed
  • Huge Rippon lutz but he can't hang on to the landing and sits down
  • Really nice position and speed through the donut variation of the camel spin
  • Lots of difficulty and personality through this step sequence that plays to the music and uses his whole body
  • Lots of speed into the combination spin with good flow through the position changes and nice toe point in the sit spin and good layback
Ross Miner, USA: 41.68 TES + 35.21 PCS = 76.89 and into 1st place
  • Whoa huge triple axel with lots of speed going into and out of it
  • Nice triple lutz + triple toe
  • Nice pick into the triple flip and a really solid landing
  • Great speed through the sit spin into the triangle position with great flow out
  • Nice camel position, good speed and a flying change of foot with a catchfoot variation
  • I think the biggest improvement in Ross's skating is how comfortable and confident he looks out on the ice when he's competing
  • Nice one foot sequence in his footwork
  • Flying entry to the sit spin with a nice tuck position but may have finished just a hair after the music
Nan Song, CHN: 38.23 TES + 32.11 PCS -1.00 = 69.34 and into 3rd place
  • Off on the entry to the quad and takes a fall
  • Off in the air on the triple axel and stumbles out of it
  • Nice triple lutz + triple toe
  • Losing some of his speed and centering through the variations in the camel spin
  • Nice stretch through his sit position
  • His step sequence is a little flaily but I find it appropriate for Requiem and it's nice to see him giving his all in the footwork
  • Camel spin into a triangle position with a change foot into a sit spin and a scratch spin with lots of traveling
  • Not his best skate today but he still did a lot of things well
Patrick Chan, CAN: 45.73 TES + 42.22 PCS = 87.95 and into 1st place
  • Too much air on the opening quad and he puts his hands down
  • Nice triple axel
  • Great speed and position in the camel spin with the flying change to the sit spin and ending with a scratch spin
  • Nice triple lutz + triple toe
  • Nice position in the camel spin and good change of foot into the twisted variation
  • Love the edges and knees in his footwork, nice ice coverage, but I'd like to see him be a bit more playful in his performance to match the choreography
Tatsuki Machida, JPN: 43.88 TES + 38.49 PCS = 82.37 and into 2nd place
  • Huge triple axel with nice flow out of it
  • Good triple flip + triple toe

  • Camel spin into a sit spin, triangle spin, change of foot into a camel and a sit spin
  • Nice triple lutz
  • Flying entry to the sit spin with a good stretched out leg position
  • Nice speed and ice coverage through the footwork with a lot of arm and leg movement and he's really getting the crowd into his performance
Richard Dornbush, USA: 29.60 TES + 32.74 PCS -1.00 = 61.34 and into 9th place
  • Triple lutz + double toe a little wonky and close to the boards
  • Triple axel was good in the air but he sat down on the landing
  • Nice camel spin position with a good catchfoot and nice speed
  • Single flip
  • Shame that he couldn't just come out here and kill this program to put nationals behind him but still a better outing
  • Nice broken leg sit spin
  • Nice ice coverage, speed and one foot sequence in his footwork--very nice timing to the music
  • Good camel spin into a sit spin and an upright spin with nice flexibility through the catchfoot
Kevin Reynolds, CAN: 34.36 TES + 34.86 PCS -1.00 = 68.22 and into 6th place
  • Love his commitment to the choreography from the opening note and how he uses all the music
  • Nice quad salchow + triple toe
  • Fall on his triple axel
  • Flying entry to an interesting half upright/half sit spin position
  • Not a lot of height on the triple lutz but nice flow out of the jump
  • Good camel position into a good catchfoot
  • Nice one foot section that almost covers the whole length of the ice in his step sequence
  • The illusion spins don't have enough stretch and flexibility to be a nice position for him but the final scratch spin is nice
Daisuke Takahashi, JPN: 41.64 TES + 41.95 PCS -1.00 = 82.59 and into 2nd place
  • Fall on the opening quad toe
  • Very solid triple axel
  • Flying sit spin with nice speed and a good stretched out position
  • Very tight on the triple lutz + triple toe
  • Nice position in the camel spin with good speed and good maintaining of the speed through the change of foot and into the catchfoot
  • Amazing speed through this footwork and so much musicality; some snow coming up but there is so much movement and edge changes
  • Nice speed and positions in the final combination spin
Jialing Wu, CHN: 27.26 TES + 28.93 PCS = 56.19 and into 13th place
  • Really big triple lutz + triple toe
  • Really wonky on the axel and he pops it
  • Triple loop really leaning forward on the landing but he hangs on
  • Really slow spin
  • This footwork seems a little uninspired after Daisuke and it's lacking the speed, power and intricacy of the top men
  • Decent speed through the tucked sit position but not great flow out
  • Good camel psoition into a nice twisted sit spin and  a triangle spin
Denis Ten, KAZ: 43.44 TES + 35.29 PCS -1.00 = 77.73 and into 4th place
  • Huge quad toe but a hard fall on the landing
  • Very nice triple axel
  • Good camel position with a flying change of foot right into the donut position
  • Triple flip + triple toe was a little tight
  • Nice speed through the twisted sit variation
  • Good speed in the camel with the flying change of foot to the sit spin but losing some speed through the triangle
  • Nice abandon, quality of movement, musicality and edges through this step sequence
Takahito Mura, JPN: 47.22 TES + 36.22 PCS = 83.44 and into 2nd place
  • Quad toe + triple toe combo nicely done!
  • Nice triple axel
  • Nice stretched out sit spin position into a nice twist variation
  • Easy triple lutz
  • Nice camel spin with a good inverted position
  • Really amazing difficulty through the turn sequence in the middle of the footwork but I'd like to see him project a little more to the audience
  • Nice combination spin with good flow out into his ending pose
Abzal Rakimgaliev, KAZ: 24.28 TES + 29.82 PCS -2.00 = 52.10 and into 17th place
  • Fall on his opening quad attempt
  • A little off on the double axel but he lands it
  • Just sat down on the triple flip and he'll be penalized for no combo
  • Really slow through the catchfoot position in his camel spin
  • I don't really understand this costume with this music--I also wonder if he'll get a music violation for the shoo-be do section--it's nonsense words but there's a lot of them
  • Decent positions and speed through his spins--not a lot of transitions between them, just going from one element to the other
  • Finished before his music and looked really out of steam by the end
