Skate America Ladies Short Program

Group 1
Rachael Flatt, USA: 20.93 TES + 22.79 PCS = 43.72
  • This is a really stunning dress on her with the low plunging back and front and the black is very flattering.
  • I like the subtle facial expressions she's using at the top of this program to really set the tone and bring the audience into the tango feel of the program
  • Double flip a little wobbly on the landing and has to hang on and can't add the combo
  • Nice triple loop + double toe
  • Good camel spin but not a good illusion variation and a little slow going into the upright
  • Good layback spin but she'll lose levels for not doing a haircutter or Biellman
  • Very nice double axel
  • She's struggling with an ankle injury that's been affecting some of her jumps and that seemed to be part of the problem with her flip as the rest of the rpogram was nice
  • Nice quality of movement and tango feeling in her step sequence and good performance quality
  • Great change of edge spread eagle to end the program
Christina Gao, USA: 31.01 TES + 25.62 PCS = 56.63 and into 1st place
  • Gorgeous, easy triple toe + triple toe combination and the toe point during the jumps really finishes off the line
  • Nice fast rotation on the double axel
  • Good Ina Bauer timed with the music
  • Lovely height on the flying entry to her spin
  • Very good triple loop
  • Nice layback spin into a good haircutter
  • Wonderfully choreographed step sequence with a lot of movement and she seems to just float over the ice and she's showing a lot more expression than we normally see in her programs
  • Good changes of position in her final combination spin
Sarah Hecken, GER: 25.48 TES + 22.63 PCS = 48.11 and into 2nd place
  • Her choreography at the top of the program seems to be very much going through the motions
  • Triple toe (turnout) + double toe
  • Triple salchow was nice
  • Flying camel picking up speed through the donut variation and a nice change of hand into a catchfoot position
  • Double axel was nice except her back was a little forward on the landing
  • Ok layback positions but she'll get some points for the haircutter position
  • Good stretched out upright spin and I like how she uses her arms to carry across the theme of the program
  • A lot of movement in her step sequence but a little choppy and not into her edges and she doesn't finish off all of the movements
Valentina Marchei, ITA: 28.37 TES + 25.64 PCS = 54.01 and into 2nd place
  • I don't love the polka dots in her arm ruffles as it gives her more of a junior appearance and she's going for more of a sophisticated program
  • Triple lutz (turnout) + double toe
  • Good triple salchow
  • I'd like to see more stretch through her free leg on the take off of her jumps
  • Good speed and positions in her layback spin with a nice haircutter
  • Nice spiral into a double axel
  • I really like the choreography and quality of movement in her step sequence and her blades are very quiet and smooth through the edge changes
  • Nice camel into a sit and upright spin before the change of foot and great positions and speed throughout the combination spin
  • Very nice program from her!
Mae Berenice Meite, FRA: 30.61 TES + 23.80 PCS = 54.41 and into 2nd place
  • This is a gorgeous color dress and the beading on the back is really intricate
  • Amazing height on the triple toe + triple toe
  • Forward on the triple lutz and hangs on to the landing
  • Nice speed in her layback spin with a good haircutter and Biellman
  • Solid double axel with a nice ride out on the landing
  • Good camel spin and picking up speed through a catchfoot
  • I think this program really suits her style and is more mature than some of the program she's put out in the past
  • She seems to be losing a bit of power in the middle of her step sequence but her energy throughout is great
  • Final combination spin has good stretched out positions
Group 2
Haruka Imai, JPN: 25.60 TES + 24.30 PCS = 49.90 and into 4th place
  • Triple salchow a little tilted on her landing and she doesn't add the combo
  • Triple loop + double toe
  • Nice camel position picking up speed through the donut and catchfoot spin
  • Great speed and stretch through the upright and sit positions in her combo spin
  • Double axel a little tight on the landing and it seemed a little tentative going into the jump
  • Beautiful arm positions in her layback spin and maintained speed through the haircutter and the Biellman
  • Seemed to be lacking a bit of energy going from her final spin into the ending pose
Ashley Wagner, USA: 30.58 TES + 30.03 PCS = 60.65 and into 1st place
  • Love the ombre dress with the asymmetrical straps in the back
  • Tons of speed going into triple flip + double toe (with both arms overhead)
  • So much detail in these transitions with her arms and expression
  • Gorgeous layback spin into a haircutter and a spiral
  • Nice camel spin with a twisted variation and a good change of foot into a catchfoot with nice centering
  • Double axel very nicely done
  • This music and her intensity and performance have really captivated the audience
  • A little two footed on her triple loop--good height in the air and it look like her free leg just got stuck under her
  • Great energy through her final sit spin and into her ending pose
  • Not her best performance but she fought for everything and landed everything which should help her put some of those short program demons to bed
Adelina Sotnikova, RUS: 29.31 TES + 29.62 PCS = 58.93 and into 2nd place
  • Triple toe + triple toe with a ton of height and distance covered and she made it look easy
  • Single flip
  • Good flexibility in a donut spin with some unique position changes
  • Great height on her double axel
  • Great positions in her layback spin into a haircutter and a one arm hold Biellman
  • Compared with some of the other ladies here who have done Spanish themed programs her youth is really showing and she doesn't fully capture the feeling
  • A little choppy in places on the step sequence and not a lot of ice coverage
  • Great closing combination spin with a lot of flexibility
  • Lots of great things about this program and she'll only get better with each event
Viktoria Helgesson, SWE: 23.58 TES + 26.71 PCS = 50.29 and into 6th place
  • Her dress is gorgeous...the color and cut give it the feel of a couture mermaid
  • Triple toe + triple toe a little tight on the landing of the second jump--not sure if she'll get full credit
  • A little wild on the loop and doubles it
  • Nice positions in her layback and picking up speed through her last position
  • Very nice double axel
  • Flying sit spin but she could use more stretch through her free leg
  • I like the dancey feel of this step sequence and it really hits all of the highlights in the music; completely in character with her program and should get her a nice PCS boost
  • A little loss of speed and centering in her final spin and she ends just a hair after her music
Alena Leonova, RUS: 19.65 TES + 27.07 PCS = 46.72 and into 9th place
  • Forward on the triple toe and she goes for the combo and can only add a single toe
  • Double flip
  • Good camel spin position but losing speed through her position changes
  • Nice double axel
  • Good layback with a haircutter and losing her centering and speed on the Biellman
  • A little bit franctic on this step sequence but it looks like she's having fun; she's on top of the ice and not really into her edges and isn't getting a lot of ice coverage
  • A little slow in her upright catchfoot spin position but better after the change of foot
  • Those jump mistakes at the top are going to cost her a lot of points.
