Grand Prix Final Pairs Preview

Volosozhar and Trankov had a slow start to their season despite winning gold at both of their events. They had a better showing at home at Rostelecom Cup breaking the 200 point mark.  With Savchenko and Szolkowy not competing here, this should be their event to lose.  They have the best short program, free skate and total scores of the season.

Bazarova and Larionov have always struggled with their side by side jumps but the rest of their elements are often strong enough to keep them in the running.  They won their first Grand Prix gold medal at NHK Trophy and also took the silver medal behind Volosozhar/Trankov at Rostelecom Cup.  They have the 5th best short program, 3rd best free skate and 3rd best total scores of the season.

Duhamel and Radford have had a strong start to their season winning silver at both of their Grand Prix assignments.  Skate Canada historically has inflated scores and they had the advantage of competing at home, but their scores held up at Trophee Eric Bompard.  They have the 7th best short program, 4th best free skate and 4th best total scores of the season.

Pang and Tong have had injury issues this season but persevered to claim a silver and gold on the Grand Prix.  Their knee injuries can cause them problems with their jumps.  They'll need them if they want to land on top of the podium, but a medal is within their reach here.  They have the 3rd best short program, 5th best free skate and 5th best total scores of the season.

Kavaguti and Smirnov have been slowly improving throughout the season and won a silver and gold medal on the Grand Prix.  This will be their first real test against a deeper field and especially against two other Russian teams to see where they stack up this season.  They have the 4th best short program, 6th best free skate and 6th best total scores of the season.

Moore-Towers and Moscovitch took advantage of a weak NHK field to claim the silver medal and a spot in the Grand Prix Final.  They set personal best scores at NHK but still are near the bottom of the pack.  They have a ways to go to catch Duhamel and Radford but they've proven themselves to be one of the top Canadian pairs teams this season.  They have the 6th best short program, 9th best free skate and 7th best total scores of the season.

My podium predictions:Gold: Volosozhar/Trankov
Silver: Bazarova/Larionov
Bronze: Duhamel/Radford

Bios of the competitors:
Duhamel/Radford, CAN:  They placed 5th at Worlds and 4th at Four Continents.  They won silver at Skate Canada and Trophee Eric Bompard to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  They qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season and finished 5th.  Their personal best is 190.49.  She is 26 and he is 27.

Moore-Towers/Moscovitch, CAN: They placed 4th at Cup of China and won silver at NHK Trophy to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  Their personal best is 180.63.  She is 20 and he is 28.

Pang/Tong, CHN: They finished 4th at Worlds.  They won silver at Skate America and gold at Cup of China to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  They are the 2010 Olympic Silver Medalists; 2006 and 2010 World Champions; 2007 World Silver Medalists; 2004 and 2011 World Bronze Medalists; 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011 Four Continents Champions; and 2003, 2005 and 2007 Four Continents Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 213.31.  She is 32 and he is 33.

Bazarova/Larionov, RUS: They finished 6th at Worlds and are the reigning European Silver Medalists.  They won silver at Rostelecom Cup and gold at NHK Trophy to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  They are the 2011 European Bronze Medalists and 2007 World Junior Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 193.79.  She is 19 and he is 26.

Kavaguti/Smirnov, RUS: They finished 7th at Worlds last season.  They won silver at Cup of China and gold at Trophee Eric Bompard to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  They qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season and won bronze.  They are the 2009 and 2010 World Bronze Medalists, 2010 European Champions, 2009 and 2011 European Silver Medalists and 2008 European Bronze Medalists.  Their personal best is 213.15.  She is 30 and he is 28.

Volosozhar/Trankov, RUS: They are the reigning World Silver Medalists and European Champions.  They won gold at Skate America and Rostelecom Cup to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  They qualified for for the Grand Prix Final last season and won silver.  They are the 2011 World Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 212.08.  She is 26 and he is 29.

Grand Prix Final Men's Preview

The men have been up and down all season but the Japanese have proved supreme with four entrants in the Final.  All three of the Grand Prix Final medalists as well as the World medalists are at this event.  Only Tatsuki Machida is at this event for the first time.

Patrick Chan made some mistakes at home in Canada and won the silver medal behind Javier Fernandez.  He threw up a huge score at Rostelecom Cup with two quads in his free skate to claim back his top spot.  He's going for his third consecutive Grand Prix Final title.  He has the 4th best short program, best free skate and best total scores of the season.

Yuzuru Hanyu has set two world record short program scores this season but the 17 year old struggled under the pressure at Skate America in his free skate.  He rebounded at NHK Trophy and showed that he is ready to compete with the best and challenge for the top of the podium.  He has the best short program, 4th best free skate and 2nd best total score of the season.

Takahiko Kozuka won the gold medal at Skate America.  Although he won the silver at Rostelecom Cup, he faltered and scored 21 points less.  If he can skate like he did at Skate America he can be on the podium, otherwise he'll be at the bottom of the pack.  He has the 5th best short program, 3rd best free skate and 5th best total scores of the season.

Javier Fernandez also started strong defeating Patrick Chan at Skate Canada but he dropped to 4th place at NHK Trophy.  He has three quads planned in his free skate but has yet to hit them all.  If he can do it, he'll have a huge technical score in addition to his PCS capabilities.  He has the 3rd best short program, 2nd best free skate and 3rd best total scores of the season.

Daisuke Takahashi has struggled this season and his programs don't really seem to fit his personality. He won two silver medals this season on the Grand Prix and didn't win gold for the first time since 2009.  He has the 2nd best short program, 5th best free skate and 4th best total scores of the season.

Tatsuki Machida was one of the biggest surprises of the season, backing up his Skate America bronze medal by beating Takahashi at Cup of China for the gold medal.  He has the 6th best short program, 8th best free skate and 7th best total scores of the season.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Patrick Chan
Silver: Yuzuru Hanyu
Bronze: Daisuke Takahashi

Yuzuru Hanyu, JPN: He is the reigning World Bronze Medalist.  He won silver at Skate America and gold at NHK Trophy to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  He qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season and finished 4th.  He is the 2011 Four Continents Silver Medalist and 2010 World Junior Champion.  His personal best is 261.03.  He is 17 years old.

Tatsuki Machida, JPN: He finished 7th at Four Continents.  He won bronze at Skate America and gold at Cup of China.  He is the 2010 Four Continents Silver Medalist.  His personal best is 232.92.  He is 22 years old.

Grand Prix Final Ladies Preview

Qualifying for the Final has been the goal all season, especially since these skaters will get to compete in the Olympic venue.  Three of these ladies competed in the Final last year, while two are competing in their first Final.

Ashley Wagner won her first Grand Prix gold at Skate America and backed it up with another gold at Trophee Eric Bompard.  She has not attempted the triple+triple this season, but has said that she might try it at the Final.  Still, her skating skills, choreography and solid jumps give her the third best short program score of the season.  She also has the best free skate and best total scores of the season and is closing in on her personal best score which she set at Four Continents last season.

Mao Asada has been putting out good short programs this season but struggled in the free skate at NHK Trophy and barely hung on to her gold medal.  She has stated that she hasn't been happy with her programs and that she knows she can perform better and land her jumps.  She has the best short program score, 4th best free skate score and 2nd best total score of the season.

Akiko Suzuki has found herself near the middle of the pack after the short program this season but has come back with a stellar free skate to put herself on the podium, but just missed gold at both of her events.  In fact, her best short program score doesn't even rank in the top 10 for this season.  She's stated that she recognizes this problem and needs to skate a better short program if she wants to keep up with the best skaters at Worlds.  She has the 2nd best free skate and 3rd best total scores of the season.

Kiira Korpi is competing in her first Final but has been dealing with injuries and illness that have affected her training time.  In a recent interview she admitted that she was not in top form heading into this competition.  Elizaveta Tuktamisheva is struggling to live up to last season's success after dealing with growth spurts and growing pains.  Christina Gao was added to the Final after Lipnitskaia's withdrawal and after the best fall season of her career.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Ashley Wagner
Silver: Akiko Suzuki
Bronze: Mao Asada

Bios of the competitors:
Kiira Korpi, FIN: She is the reigning European Silver Medalist.  She won bronze at Cup of China and gold at Rostelecom Cup to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  She is the 2007 and 2011 European Bronze Medalist.  Her personal best is 177.19.  She is 24 years old.

Mao Asada, JPN: She placed 6th at Worlds and is the reigning Four Continents Silver Medalist.   She won gold at Cup of China and NHK Trophy to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  She qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season.  She is the 2010 Olympic Silver Medalist, 2008 and 2010 World Champion, 2007 World Silver Medalist, 2008 and 2010 Four Continents Champion, 2001 Four Continents Silver Medalist, 2009 Four Continents Bronze Medalist, 2005 World Junior Champion and 2006 World Junior Silver Medalist.  Her personal best is 205.50.  She is 22 years old.

Akiko Suzuki, JPN: She is the reigning World Bronze Medalist.   She won silver at Skate Canada and NHK Trophy to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  She qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season and won silver.  She is the 2010 Four Continents Silver Medalist.  Her personal best is 187.79.  She is 27 years old.

Elizaveta Tuktamisheva, RUS: She placed 4th at Skate Canada and won silver at Trophee Eric Bompard to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.  She qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season and finished 4th.  She is the 2011 World Junior Silver Medalist.  Her personal best is 182.89.  She is 15 years old.
