NHK Trophy Men's Preview

Patrick Chan, Takahiko Kozuka and Tatsuki Machida have already earned their spots in the Grand Prix Final.  Five skaters are competing at this event for the three remaining spots in the Final.

Javier Fernandez stunned many by defeating Patrick Chan at home at Skate Canada to claim his first Grand Prix gold medal.  He is going for an ambitious program with three quads in his free skate including one in the bonus and he hit two of them at Skate Canada.  He also has the PCS skills to match and if he hits everything he'll be tough to beat here.  He needs a 4th place finish or higher to guarantee himself a spot in the Final.

He'll be facing off against his training mate Yuzuru Hanyu who won the short program at Skate America with a world record score.  The pressure proved to be too much for the young skater and he crumbled in the free skate but managed to hold on for a silver medal.  If he can handle the pressure in front of the home crowd, he could give Fernandez a run for his money.  He needs a bronze medal or better to qualify for the Final.

Daisuke Takahashi had a somewhat disappointing performance at Cup of China and was overtaken by his mostly unknown teammate Tatsuki Machida.  I didn't feel that his free skate really showed off his skating to his fullest potential and his quad is still a work in progress.  He'll need to show improvement if he wants to find himself on top of the podium at home.  He needs a bronze medal or better to qualify for the Final.

Sergei Voronov took home a bronze medal this season  from Cup of China but he doesn't have much outside of the jumps.  He'll need to hit everything if he wants to keep pace with the deep field here.  A silver medal will keep in the race depending on how everyone else places but a gold medal will guarantee him a trip to Sochi.

Adam Rippon finished behind Voronov at Cup of China and is still struggling with some of his jumps including his signature triple lutz as well as the triple axel.  He is still settling in with his new coach and will be looking for a medal here.  He needs a gold medal to qualify for the Final but that is likely going to be out of his reach unless the other skaters make mistakes.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Javier Fernandez
Silver: Yuzuru Hanyu
Bronze: Daisuke Takahashi

Cup of China Men's Free Skate

Group 2
Nan Song, CHN: TES + PCS =
  • Collided with Rippon in 6 minute warmup and withdrew
Adam Rippon, USA: 61.81 TES + 71.86 PCS = 133.67 Total: 205.48 and into 1st place
  • Popped his axel into a single + double toe
  • Nice triple salchow
  • With this new haircut he looks a lot like Kent Boyd from SYTYCD
  • A little low on the landing of the triple loop but hangs on
  • I like this fun carefree program--such a departure from what he normally does and it shows a different side of his skating
  • Flying sit spin with a nice twisted position and good speed maintaining through the back donut
  • I like the little choreographic touches in his transitions
  • Triple axel and hangs on to the landing
  • Triple lutz + double toe + double loop with one arm variation on the lutz
  • Nice choreographic step sequence really playing to the crowd
  • Nice speed in his combination spin with a good layback position included
  • Step out and under-rotated Rippon lutz
  • Double axel
  • Nice spread eagle into triple flip right at the end of the program
  • If he wants to break into the top group he'll need to get consistency on that triple axel as it is an absolute MUST in addition to quads.  He also seems to be struggling with his lutz lately which is his signature jump.
Sergei Voronov, RUS: 73.59 TES + 70.44 PCS = 144.03 Total: 217.61 and into 1st place
  • Big quad toe just slightly forward on the landing
  • Huge triple axel a little off in the air but he lands it
  • Quad toe + double toe-- not a lot of transitions between those three jumps but he gained a lot of points
  • Needs more flexibility through the catchfoot position in his camel spin; not a lot of speed but maintained throughout
  • A little slow on the step sequence and he doesn't always extend through his free leg
  • Triple toe + double toe
  • Triple flip
  • Double axel + double toe + double toe
  • Triple loop
  • Triple salchow--solid jumping day for him
  • I like the freedom in this step sequence and he seems to be connecting with the audience and his music more
  • Good speed in the camel position but his leg is slightly forward; traveling a lot after the change of foot and not a lot of flexibility in some of the positions
  • Sit spin needs more stretch in the free leg
Tatsuki Machida, JPN: 76.66 TES + 77.78 PCS -1.00 = 153.44 Total: 236.92 and into 1st place
  • Big triple axel but it looked like his free leg touched the ice on the landing
  • Fall on the quad toe
  • Triple lutz + triple toe off in the air and tight on the landing of his second jump
  • Not a lot of rotations in the sit spin and no change of position so it will be a lower level
  • A lot of movement in his step sequence with use of his full body but seems choppy in places and he's on top of his blade instead of into his edges in places
  • Triple axel almost landed in a squat but he manages to tack on the sequence
  • Nice camel spin
  • Triple loop
  • Triple lutz
  • Triple flip + double toe
  • Triple toe
  • He seems a little frantic in places in this choreographic step sequence and I'd like to see him have a bit more control while still having the same passion and feel for the choreography
  • Not a lot of speed in his combination spin
Daisuke Takahashi, JPN: 65.30 TES + 82.66 PCS -1.00 = 146.96 Total: 231.75 and into 2nd place
  • Two foots the quad toe but stands up
  • I hate this costume--not sure what he's supposed to be; it looks like someone threw two costumes together
  • Two foots the quad toe + single toe
  • Huge triple axel right on the music
  • Nice positions in his spins, good centering, not a ton of speed, but maintained throughout
  • Good step sequence and I think he's doing all he can with what he's been given but I don't think this program truly lets him show off his style and play to the crowd which are two of his biggest strengths
  • Nice layback spin
  • Triple lutz a little forward + double toe
  • Triple axel step out + single toe
  • Triple salchow out of steps
  • Triple loop
  • He seems to be really running out of steam and he doesn't seem to be into this program at all; no magic at all and really lackluster
  • Triple flip
  • Now we're getting a little something in this choreographic step sequence
  • Good speed in his final combination spin

European Men's Preview

After sitting out the entirety of last season, Plushenko is back and ready to start his push toward the Olympics in Sochi in 2014.  He sat out the beginning of this season recovering from knee injuries and made his season debut at Russian nationals where he took home the title, defeating reigning World Bronze Medalist Artur Gachinski.  He is well known for his jumping abilities, including his quads, but he focuses on the jumps often at the expense of transitions and choreography.

Javier Fernandez has had a stellar season, winning the first ever Grand Prix medal for Spain and qualifying for the Grand Prix Final where he won bronze.  He has successfully landed 9 quads on the Grand Prix this season and has shown he can combine artistry with the technical content.  His problems have come in the free skate where he makes small errors on some of the jumps in the middle of his program.  He truly fights for everything and never gives up on his programs but he does give points away.

Brian Joubert is also making his season debut after sitting out the Grand Prix season due to injury.  He's returned to his Matrix free skate in hope's of claiming another European title.  In his first competition of the season, he defeated reigning European Champion Florent Amodio to claim the French national title.  He is also well known for his quads, but missing a quad can effect his mental game and cause a collapse in the rest of the program.

Artur Gachinski surprised many when he took home the bronze medal from last season's World Championships.  He also is armed with a quad jump but has wildly inconsistent results and hasn't lived up to his title this season, finishing well off the podium in his Grand Prix assignments.

Michal Brezina started off the season with a gold medal finish at his first Grand Prix event, but while his score improved throughout the season, his results continued to slip.  He keeps talking about putting the quad in his programs but hasn't been able to deliver.  He'll need to step it up if he wants to claim his first European medal.

Samuel Contesti improved throughout the Grand Prix season, going from 8th to 4th.  He has the ability to be an amazingly entertaining skater when he is clean, but the life can really go out of his programs if he starts making errors on his jumps.

Kevin van der Perren is another skater known for big jumps, including the quad, but also for inconsistency.  He has stated that Europeans will be his final competition before he retires and if he sticks to that he could go in to this event with nothing to lose and no reason to hold anything back.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Evgeni Plushenko
Silver: Javier Fernandez
Bronze: Brian Joubert
