U.S. Nationals: Novice Pairs Free Skate

Donahoe/Rappold: 19.46 TES + 22.84 PCS = 42.30 Total: 63.08
  • Completely vertical single twist
  • Through the legs and back into a press lift with a really slow rotation
  • Throw double salchow with a really big lead in to the jump
  • She really struggles with the side by side jumps (supposed to be a combo) and stumbles
  • Nice stretched out position for her in the pairs spin but no speed at all and a really awkward change of direction
  • They need to find a new position for him in the pairs spiral
  • Side by side salchows were nice
  • Really slow in the side by side spins but their unison is good through the first half
  • Nice lift into the sit position but she could use a bigger split in her legs
  • She really struggles with the throw double lutz and has to step out and put her hand down
  • Decent death spiral and they finish a beat after the music
LoRusso/Habeeb: 19.19 TES + 21.49 PCS -2.00 = 38.68 Total: 56.75 and into 2nd place
  • She's pretty flat int he death spiral and they only do two rotations
  • Single twist that is completely vertical
  • They nearly crash into each other on their side by side jumps and neither one seem to have a clean landing
  • Nice split position from her in the hand to hip lift but there is no speed in the rotation
  • Decent pairs spiral but I'd like to see them closer together
  • They start off on timing in the side by side spins and never seem to have quite the same position or number of rotations
  • The pairs spin is really slow but the positions are ok
  • Double single salchow
  • She falls on their sequence but they both pull of the axel but at different times
  • She falls on her back in the throw double loop
  • I didn't see a second overhead lift, but they did have an extended dance lift toward the end of the program
Thomas/Fu: 14.92 TES + 22.05 PCS = 36.97 Total: 50.08 and into 3rd place
  •  The same backwards x lift she fell on yesterday opens the program and while it was still scary they hang on to it
  • Throw double loop she lands
  • They get really far apart before their side by side triples
  • She falls on their next side by side jumps
  • Good timing and distance between each other on the side by side spins
  • She is almost completely flat on the ice in the death spiral, they only do one rotation and there's a bit of an awkward exit
  • The single twist gets no height, is completely vertical and he almost misses her on the catch
  • He tries to get her up in the second lift but can't do it and ends up holding her awkwardly by the crotch at shoulder height
  • Good pairs spiral positions
  • She steps out of the throw double salchow and puts a hand down
  • A big loss of centering on the pairs spin but some nice positions
Xu/Przepioski: 28.75 TES + 24.79 PCS -2.00 = 51.54 Total: 71.64 and into 1st place
  • Really pretty death spiral position from her and just a little bobble getting out of it
  • Good double twist even though the catch wasn't quite there yet
  • Nice throw double salchow
  • Not a lot of unison on their side by side spins but they have nice positions and good speed
  • Press from the side to the hand to hand lift with a nice position for her but he has to duck under her arms to set her down
  • They both need a lot more stretch through their pairs spiral position
  • Good speed and centering through the pairs spin but he misses her foot on the change of position and it looks like they exited it early
  • Slide through the legs and back to a press hand to hand hold and switch to a hand to hip hold but she needs to hold the split position in her legs
  • She steps out of their side by side double lutz
  • Throw double loop got no height and she falls
  • She falls out of the double flip + double toe right at the end of their program
Smith/Evans: 29.87 TES + PCS = 61.46 Total: 89.37 and into 1st place
  •  She has such long legs!
  • Nice throw double to open the program
  • She puts a hand down on their side by side jumps
  • Hip press lift with a nice extended position and catch foot that she holds as he puts her down
  • They both bobble on their sequence but land both jumps
  •  Decent timing on their side by side spins with some interesting position choices
  • Double twist was completely vertical and her foot hit the ice on the way down
  • The positions in their pairs spin don't seem very stable and they can't hold their positions solidly
  • Hand to hand hold is nice and secure with a good position from her
  • Good height on the throw double salchow
  • Nicely matched position in the pairs spiral sequence
  • Really nice death spiral position with a change of hold
Viola/Johnson: 34.82 TES + 35.51 PCS = 70.33 Total: 104.15 and into 1st place
  •  Decent double twist with arms over the head on the catch
  • Good distance on the throw triple salchow but she two foots the landing
  • She falls on the first jump of their double axel sequence but he waits for her to catch up to compete the second jump
  • A little off on timing at the beginning of their pairs spins but they meet up with each other
  • Really nice spiral position from these two--I think he has more stretch than she does!
  • Hand to hand lift and he slips a bit on the ice but hangs on to it
  • Really solid throw double loop with nice ice coverage
  • Double flip was well timed with a one armed variation on the end
  • She really needs to stretch her bottom leg in the split position on the hip hold lift
  • Decent speed on the pairs spin
Klopstock/Phillips: 20.50 TES + 30.29 PCS = 50.79 Total: 78.39 and into 3rd place
  • Good speed into their first lift with a very secure hand to hand hold
  • Single twist was completely vertical and he crashed into her on the landing
  • She singles the first jump of their combo but tacks on the double toe
  • She two foots the throw double toe
  • They are really far apart on their side by side spins and the camera had to pan back to fit them in
  • She loses the edge on her spiral and has to readjust before regaining her position
  • He really struggles to get her into the second hand to hand lift and kind of drops her hard back down to the ice on her feet
  • Throw double flip she lands in an awkward position with her legs far apart
  • She singles the side by side flip
  • Good death spiral position with a nice exit
  • She really needs to stretch through the camel position and look up and project on the pairs spin
Middleton/Hennings: 37.56 TES + 40.68 PCS -1.00 = 77.24 Total 104.31 and into 1st place
  •  They are skating a Wizard of Oz themed program and she looks absolutely gorgeous in this dress
  • At 12 and 15, if they can stay together they have a lot of potential to really grow both nationally and internationally
  • Nice double twist with a clean catch and good speed
  • Really solid throw double flip
  • She is such a performer!
  • Really nice getting up into the lift with her in a catch foot and he has a one hand hold and a one arm exit
  • She gets no height on the solo jumps but completes the combo
  • Good speed in their side by side psins but he can't seem to control them and has several bobbles and continues to drift away from her
  • Nice matched lines on their pair spiral
  • Really pretty death spiral position
  • Another solid throw double
  • Hip press lift and he gets her right up there with a nice split position, one arm hold and a flip exit
  • Her double flip was wild and she falls
  • Nice positions in the pairs spin but they could use more speed
Zaitsev/Utah Stevens: 34.66 TES + 39.14 PCS = 73.80 Total: 107.70 and into 1st place
  •  Really nice opening hand to hand lift with nice posture from her
  • Good throw double
  • Good double twist with a nice catch with her arms over her head
  • Double flip + double toe with a lot of space between them but good timing
  • Nice positions and timing in their side by side spins but she has a really bad sickling problem on her heel stretch position
  • Press lift from her in a dance hold at his hip--she has a great stretched out split position and a nice exit into a dance lift in a split
  • A little slow on the death spiral and that causes her to lose her position
  • She ekes out the landing on the throw double salchow
  • He puts his hand down on their side by side jumps
  • Decent positions and speed in their pairs spin
  • Their spirals were performed without contact between the two of them--I wonder if that will cost them points
Shaughnessy/Morgan: 36.34 TES + 40.51 PCS = 76.85 Total: 113.87 and into 1st place
  • Nice position in the opening lift with an easy exit

    • Double twist was completely vertical as opposed to the horizontal twist you'll see from top teams

    • Very nice position in this pairs spin with a great relationship between the two of them
    • Not a lot of height in the double twist but a mostly clean catch
    • I really like all the transitions and choreographic details in their program
    • She could use more arch through this death spiral and they lose a lot of speed after the change of hold
    Smith/Evans: 18.06 TES + 24.60 PCS = 27.91 and into 5th place
    • She is 18 and he is 20 and they are skating to Music of the Night

    • They don't really seem to be skating to their music at all through the step sequence
    • Good death spiral position but sort on an awkward exit
    • They finished about 4 beats before their music ended
    Fields/Pacini: 26.70 TES + 30.21 PCS = 38.13 and into 2nd place

    • Nice death spiral position but they could use a little bit more speed
    • Really nice skate
    Thomas/Fu: 6.22 TES + 15.34 PCS -2.00 = 13.11 and into 11th place

    • Good side by side jumps
    • She is laying completely flat on the ice in the death spiral

    • Not a lot of speed in the step sequence and a lot of bobbles
    • Some bad posture in their pairs spin
    • They finished well before their music

    • She seems like she's trying to keep up with him the whole time in the step sequence and he bobbled on a twizzle
