Skate America Pairs Short Program

Group 1
Denney/Coughlin, USA: 33.82 TES + 25.80 PCS = 59.62
  • Its nitpicky, but I wish someone would teach her how to do a proper bun so it doesn't look so messy
  • She's in a pretty purple dress with lots of crystals
  • Very high triple twist with a clean landing
  • They have a very good connection on the ice for being so new and are smiling at each other the whole time
  • Side by side triple toes were well timed
  • Nice movement in their step sequence but some of the steps for her seem a little forced and underneath herself
  • Nice press into the overhead lift and she has a nice position in the air with a catch foot
  • She was leaning in the air on the throw triple flip but nailed the landing and the jump had a lot of height
  • Nice low death spiral
  • Good speed through the ir pair spin with some nice positions and smooth position changes
Vise/Baldwin, USA: 27.12 TES + 24.43 PCS = 51.55 and into 2nd place
  • They are repeating their Pirates of the Caribbean short program from last season
  • Double twist but it was very clean
  • Lot of air on the throw triple loop and she just couldn't hang on to the landing and had to put a hand down
  • Their side by side triples make me so nervous because they get so close before the jump, but they were nice
  • The pair spin has beautiful positions and speed and great flexibility form her
  • I'd like to see her maintain the split position in the lift, her leg starts to drop a little as she's up there
  • Nice low death spiral but she could use a more arched position
  • The first part of their step sequence is done in a hold and once they split apart they maintain a nice distance; great speed, power and coverage of the ice; she has a little bobble at the end of the sequence and it throws them off sync
Marley/Brubaker, USA: 29.68 TES + 26.48 PCS = 56.16 and into 2nd place
  • He is showing off a new shorter haircut here
  • Nice speed at the top of the program
  • Very nice side by side triple toes and she is really performing as soon as she lands
  • Nice height on the throw triple twist but she grabs on to his shoulder on the landing; still it's much better than last season
  • Nice speed on the spins and good change of positions and a good exit from the element
  • Tons of height on the throw triple lutz but she has to put her hand down
  • Nice section in hold to start off their step sequence and they're showing off a ton of personality here--you can tell they're so much more comfortable with the elements and are really focusing on the performance quality
  • Great extension from her through the lift and a nice one arm exit
  • Great speed through the death spiral and a nice change of arm from him
  • This program is such a nice vehicle for them and they've improved so much
Zhang/Zhang, CHN: 34.17 TES + 28.68 PCS = 62.85 and into 1st place
  • The back of her costume looks like she has a corset tied over a back brace, but other than that it's really nice and shows off how skinny she is
  • They open with a huge triple loop that looks very easy
  • Nice triple twist with a clean catch but not as much height as you normally see from Chinese teams
  • the side by side triple salchows were nice and he lands his even though he's close to the boards
  • Great speed through the spin but an awkward pause in the middle as they change direction
  • Very nice lift with her on her side being held up by her hip
  • They are performing their step sequence on opposite sides of the rink which I don't like and could cost them points; interesting cartwheel move in the middle from her
  • Beautiful death spiral position for her with a change of arm from him
Group 2
Moore-Towers/Moscovitch, CAN: 32.20 TES + 27.40 PCS = 59.60 and into 3rd place
  • She has an even shorter haircut this season and a slightly darker color
  • She looks like she's wearing some kind of patch on her back, wonder if she's injured
  • Triple twist with her landing on his shoulder and not a lot of height
  • Triple toes were really nicely done
  • Nice throw triple loop
  • Nice entry into the lift with his knee on the ice and a flip exit out of it
  • She's a little sideways on the death spiral
  • Nice change of music in their step sequence and they're really showing off a lighter more playful side
  • Good position in their pair spin but a pause before their change of foot
Hausch/Wende, GER: 25.63 TES + 24.31 PCS -1.00 = 48.94 and into 6th place
  • Nice triple twist on the music but he doesn't quite catch her high enough
  • Nice throw triple salchow and I like that he turns around to match her landing position instead of watching her land
  • She falls on the side by side triple toes
  • Nice twist lift in the middle of their step sequence and I like the mix of unison and matching choreography here
  • A nice lift into their pair spin with a much smoother change of direction
  • Great position for her in the lift but they have a little difficulty in the position change and it doesn't look like they get the hold right
  • Nice death spiral position for her but not a lot of speed after the change of arm
Bazarova/Larionov, RUS: 32.42 TES + 28.20 PCS -1.00 = 59.62 and into 3rd place
  • She looks even more gorgeous today than normal in a stunning lavender and white dress
  • Side by side triple toes and he falls
  • Huge throw triple twist with a clean catch
  • Nice high throw triple flip with a great landing position
  • Very nice death spiral with a great arch and an exit from behind his back
  • Nice extension from her in the pairs spin with good speed
  • Entrance to the lift from his back and she is in a scorpion position in the air--her lines are just to die for
  • I like how they start their step sequence doing different steps and then come together
Savchenko/Szolkowy, GER: 29.48 TES + 30.97 PCS -1.00 = 59.45 and into 5th place
  • She is wearing a tiffany blue dress with floaty arms and a lot of illusion mesh
  • He is wearing a black costume with a silver collar
  • They appear to be taking the Angels and Demons theme literally, each playing a part
  • She takes a fall on the throw triple axel but they really went for it and she had a lot of height
  • Triple twist with a little bit of difficulty on the landing
  • Side by side triples were landed together
  • Nice position chnages through the lift straight into a dance lift
  • Really nice Biellman position from her in the pair spin and a unique position change where he kicks over her head and does an extra half rotation before catching her
  • Nice death spiral
  • Some innovative moves in their step sequence
  • I'm glad they went for the triple axel here, especially since they're doing three Grand Prix events and only their top two scores qualify them for the Final so they have room to try some new elements and make some errors
