Rostelecom Cup Dance Preview

Virtue and Moir showed some cracks in their programs when they lost levels and finished the short dance in second place at Skate Canada.  Their Carmen free dance seems to be hit or miss with some people loving it and others hating it.  It will be interesting to see how it is received outside of Canada and if they are able to clean up the technical mistakes in their short program.  They'll need any medal to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.

Ilinykh and Katsalapov started off their season last week at Crystal Skate where they put up a huge score.  Senior B's tend to be overscored plus they'll have the disadvantage of competing in back to back events but if they can repeat their results they could give Virtue and Moir a run for their money.  Their skating skills and lines are to die for but their choreography last season did not show them off to their full advantage.  At Worlds they showed they earned their spot as the top Russian dance team but with the resurgence of Bobrova and Soloviev, they'll need a good result to hold on to their spot.

The Shibutanis are coming back from an up and down season which saw them win their first Grand Prix gold medal and qualify for their first Grand Prix Final but fell to 8th at Worlds.  They are known for their personalities on the ice, speed, twizzles and skating skills.  They are showing a different side to their skating this year with a grown up Memoirs of a Geisha free skate.  They traded places all season with the Russians and it will be a close fight between the two for the silver medal.

Two siblings are competing at this event representing two different countries.  Nelli Zhiganshina competes on behalf of Germany and her younger brother Ruslan Zhiganshin competes for Russia.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Virtue/Moir
Silver: Shibutani/Shibutani
Bronze: Ilinykh/Katsalapov

Bios of the competitors:
Orford/Williams, CAN: They placed 6th at Junior Worlds.  They won gold at JGP Australia and finished 6th at JGP Austria last season.  Their personal best is 134.61.  She is 20 and he is 19.

Virtue/Moir, CAN: They are the reigning World and Four Continents Champions.  They won gold at Skate Canada.  They qualified for the Grand Prix Final last season and won silver.  They are the 2010 Olympic Gold Medalists, 2010 World Champions, 2008 and 2011 World Silver Medalists, 2009 World Bronze Medalists, 2008 Four Continents Champions, 2009 Four Continents Silver Medalists, 2006 and 2007 Four Continents Bronze Medalists, 2006 World Junior Champions and 2005 World Junior Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 183.84.  She is 23 and he is 25.

Zhiganshina/Gazsi, GER: They finished 11th at Worlds and 8th at Europeans.  They placed 5th at Skate America.  Their personal best is 141.36.  She is 25 and he is 28.

Coomes/Buckland, GBR: They placed 14th at Worlds and 6th at Europeans.  They placed 8th at Skate America and 4th at Cup of China last season.  Their personal best is 145.31.  She is 23 and he is 23.

Ilinykh/Katsalapov, RUS: They finished 5th at Worlds and are the reigning European Bronze Medalists.  They won bronze at NHK Trophy last season and finished 4th at Trophee Eric Bompard.  They are the 2010 World Junior Champions.  Their personal best is 161.00.  She is 18 and he is 21.

Monko/Khaliavin, RUS: They are the 2011 World Junior Champions and 2010 World Junior Bronze Medalists.  Their personal best is 155.04.  She is 20 and he is 21.

Sinitsina/Zhiganshin, RUS: They are the reigning Junior World Champions.  They placed 6th at Cup of China.  Their personal best is 153.81.  She is 17 and he is 20.

Shibutani/Shibutani, USA: They placed 8th at Worlds and 4th at Four Continents.  They won silver at Cup of China and gold at NHK Trophy last season to qualify for the Grand Prix Final where they finished 5th.  They are the 2011 World Bronze Medalists, 2011 Four Continents Bronze Medalists and 2009 World Junior Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 163.79.  She is 18 and he is 21.

Rostelecom Cup Pairs Preview

Volosozhar and Trankov started off their season with a win at Skate America.  Their programs seemed a little slow and lackluster but they admitted that they were struggling with the time change.  That shouldn't be a problem at this event since they'll be competing at home.  If their scores don't improve, there might be a bigger problem with injuries or their programs this season.  They need a medal of any color to qualify for the Final.

Bazarova and Larionov withdrew from Nebelhorn earlier this season due to injuries.  They have an elegant style on the ice and a classic Russian look in their lifts and lines but jumps are not their strong suit.  If they're healthy and they can land their jumps they should easily make the podium here.

Denney and Coughlin claimed their first Grand Prix medal, a bronze at Skate America.  Their technical elements are some of the best in the World but they have been working to bring up their PCS scores.  They showed improvement already this season but will have to continue the upward climb in order to compete with the best.  They need a gold medal to qualify for the Final and a silver medal to stay in the hunt.

Lawrence and Swiegers had a good start to their season with a medal at the U.S. Figure Skating classic and finishing just off the podium in 4th place at Skate Canada.  They have a nice style on the ice but lack some of the technical fire to compete with the big teams.  If one of the other teams falters, they'll be ready to step in and climb onto the podium.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Volosozhar/Trankov
Silver: Denney/Coughlin
Bronze: Bazarova/Larionov

Bios of the competitors:
Lawrence/Swiegers, CAN: They finished 7th at Four Continents.  They placed 4th at Skate Canada.  They are the 2011 Four Continents Bronze Medalists.  Their personal best is 171.73.  She is 22 and he is 25.

Della Monica/Guarise, ITA: They placed 15th at Worlds.  Their personal best is 137.31.  She is 23 and he is 24.

Bazarova/Larionov, RUS: They finished 6th at Worlds and are the reigning European Silver Medalists.  They placed 5th at Skate America and won silver at Trophee Eric Bompard last season.  They are the 2011 European Bronze Medalists and 2007 World Junior Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 193.79.  She is 19 and he is 26.

Martiusheva/Rogonov, RUS: They are the 2009 World Junior Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 151.10.  She is 17 and he is 24.

Volosozhar/Trankov, RUS: They are the reigning World Silver Medalists and European Champions.  They won gold at Skate America.  They qualified for for the Grand Prix Final last season and won silver.  They are the 2011 World Silver Medalists.  Their personal best is 212.08.  She is 26 and he is 29.

Denney/Coughlin, USA: They placed 8th at Worlds and are the reigning Four Continents Silver Medalists.  They won bronze at Skate America.  Their personal best is 185.42.  She is 19 and he is 26.

Vise/Baldwin, USA: They placed 6th at Skate Canada.  Their personal best is 155.42.  She is 26 and he is 34.

Rostelecom Cup Ladies Preview

Kiira Korpi missed Worlds last season due to injury but came back to win the bronze medal at Cup of China last week and won silver at Finlandia Trophy earlier this season.  With the back to back events she won't have time to make any adjustments and fatigue might be an issue.  She'll need a gold medal to qualify for the Final while a silver will keep her in the running.

Agnes Zawadzki claimed the gold at the U.S. Figure Skating Classic earlier this season and showed an improved ability to deliver a good free skate after a solid short program performance.  However, the scores from that event have not been held up all season.  If she can replicate her performance she could claim her first Grand Prix medal.

Adelina Sotnikova started her season with her third straight Grand Prix bronze medal at Skate America.    Some jump errors in her free skate led her to improvise and insert an extra combo which was ruled invalid.  That mistake hurt her technical score so she should easily be able to improve here.  She'll also need a gold medal to qualify for the Final and a silver to stay in the running.

Kanako Murakami qualified for the Grand Prix Final in her debut season two years ago but failed to medal at either of her assignments last year.  She has had trouble putting together two clean programs in the past and will need two solid performances in this field to medal.  She won the bronze medal at Skate Canada and is also looking for a gold or silver for a chance to go to Sochi.

Gracie Gold struggled in her Grand Prix debut at Skate Canada and admitted that she had trouble keeping her competitive focus.  Now that she has some international experience at that level we'll have to see if she's better able to handle the competition and regain the form that led her to a World Junior medal or if she's rattled by that performance.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Kiira Korpi
Silver: Adelina Sotnikova
Bronze: Agnes Zawadzki

Bios of the competitors:
Kiira Korpi, FIN: She is the reigning European Silver Medalist.  She won bronze at Cup of China.  She is the 2007 and 2011 European Bronze Medalist.  Her personal best is 169.86.  She is 24 years old.
Valentina Marchei, ITA: She finished 8th at Worlds and Europeans.  She placed 4th at Skate America.  Her personal best is 158.79.  She is 25 years old.

Kanako Murakami, JPN: She placed 5th at Worlds and 4th at Four Continents.  She won bronze at Skate Canada.  She is the 2010 World Junior Champion.  Her personal best is 178.59.  She is 17 years old.

Polina Korobeynikova, RUS: She placed 19th at Worlds and 4th at Europeans.  She placed 4th at JGP Australia and won gold at  JGP Romania last season to qualify for the Junior grand Prix Final where she won bronze.  Her personal best is 164.13.  She is 16 years old.

Alena Leonova, RUS: She is the reigning World Silver Medalist and placed 7th at Europeans.  She placed 7th at Skate America.  She qualified for the Grand Prix Final last seasona and won bronze.  She is the 2009 Junior World Champion.  Her personal best is 184.28.  She is 21 years old.

Adelina Sotnikova, RUS: She is the reigning Junior World Bronze Medalist.  She won bronze at Skate America.  She is the 2011 Junior World Champion.  Her personal best is 178.87.  She is 16 years old.

Viktoria Helgesson, SWE: She finished 11th at Worlds and 5th at Europeans.  She placed 8th at Skate America.  Her personal best is 161.79.  She is 24 years old.

Rostelecom Cup Men's Preview

Takahiko Kozuka rebounded from his up and down season last year to claim gold at Skate America.  He hit two quads and two triple axels in his free skate at that event and most importantly, he beat two of his Japanese rivals.  The Japanese men have been superb this season and Kozuka will need a gold or silver medal if he wants to head to Sochi for the Grand Prix Final.

Patrick Chan finished in a surprising 2nd place at Skate Canada.  As many of the other skaters have upped their technical ante to match Chan, he can no longer afford to make the mistakes that he got away with last season.  He also has two quads and good triple axels along with good PCS qualities but he often makes mistakes such as falling on his step sequence.  His Skate Canada score was 8 points lower than Kozuka's Skate America score.  While neither man was perfect in their first outing, Chan will have to play catch-up if he wants to beat Kozuka.  He'll need a gold or silver medal to qualify for the Final.

After boot problems last season kept Richard Dornbush from the podium at U.S. nationals he is back with new skates and seems to have regained the form which took him to a JGPF title and 9th place at Worlds.  The triple axel seemed to bother him last season and he'll need it He started his season at Finlandia Trophy with a silver medal.  His score at Finlandia was only 3 points behind Chan's at Skate Canada but Senior B events are often scored higher than Grand Prix events but he should be firmly in the mix for the podium.

Oda won the bronze medal at Skate Canada showing that he's returned from the injury that cut his season short last year.  With a deep Japanese field, he'll need a good performance here if he wants to stay in contention for the World team.  He'll need a gold medal if he wants to qualify for the Final and a silver medal will keep him in the running.

Johnny Weir is returning to the Grand Prix for the first time since 2009 but he's admitted his comeback is a work in progress.  He'll need a 30 point improvement over Finlandia if he hopes to contend for the podium here.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Takahiko Kozuka
Silver: Patrick Chan
Bronze: Nobunari Oda
