U.S. Nationals: Senior Free Dance

Hoptman/Filchenkov: 37.92 TES + 30.69 PCS = 68.61 Total: 114.88
  • They are currently in 11th place and are skating a Tango
  • A nice cross pattern between them on the twizzles but not a lot of ice coverage or speed
  • Good eye contact with each other, matching leg lines and ease in the change of holds in their first step sequence
  • Rotational lift with her draped over his shoulder into a position change
  • I appreciate the tango flair they're putting in their program but it lacks the passion and attack of a traditional tango
  • One leg and backwards skating for him with her kneeling on his free leg
  • Nice stretched out positions for her in the dance spin but not a lot of speed and almost slowing to a stop by the end
  • Nice change of positions throughout that lift with him in a spread eagle
  • Split rotational lift with her leg up on his shoulder with decent speed
Zuber/Herring: 36.57 TES + 29.59 PCS = 66.16 Total: 109.29 and into 2nd place
  • They are in 13th place after the short dance
  • Cartwheel over to a straightline lift with her standing on his boot and arching back
  • They have some trouble regaining the hold positions after some of the turns in the footwork and their leg lines don't always match
  • They seem to just be getting through the choreography instead of really selling it to the audience by finishing out their movements, committing to them and using facial expressions to complement
  • She looks really uncomfortable in the twizzles and they're very far apart
  • Really nice position at the beginning of their dance spin but very slow by the end
  • Nice split curve lift with her standing on his boot
  • A lot of ice spray from their blades in this second step sequence showing that not all of their edge changes are clean
  • Haircutter rotational lift and I'd like to see her really stretch through her free leg in that position
  • Overall this program seemed very slow and tentative but they had great material to work with
Glastris/Allison: 12.66 TES + 20.58 PCS = 33.24 Total: 61.46 and into 3rd place
  • Her dress is gorgeous--a very nice blue green watercolor with a great cut
  • They are currently in 14th place and are skating to Frank Sinatra
  • Nice backwards one leg position for him and holding her up in the air and arching back right into a change of position and a rotational lift--he loses his balance and has to set her down awkwardly
  • Something went wrong in their spin as well and after doing about one rotation they have to abort it and go to their next spot and wait for the music to catch up
  • No synchronization at all on their twizzles
  • Nice change of holds in this step sequence but it looks like he bobbled one of the turns; I'd like to see more ice coverage from them as well
  • He's really forward on a spread eagle split lift and she has to put her hands down on the ice to keep herself from falling
  • A little off through that whole step sequence and not very deep into their knees and edges
  • He trips getting into the final lift and they don't even try to get it up
  • Really tough to watch--got to feel bad for them; I think missing that first lift hurt their confidence and threw off their timing for the rest of the program
Schmucker/Munday: TES + PCS = 70.36 Total: 113.54 and into 2nd place
  • They are skating to Evita and are currently in 12th place
  • Nice spread eagle position in the lift with her laying on his leg and arched over the ice
  • Good speed through the step sequence with some loss of synchronization in places and good use of her free arm
  • Loss of unison on their twizzles and they get a little close together
  • She drops her free leg in a few places in the second step sequence
  • Rotational lift in a split position and a flip over into a reverse fish
  • Nice straight line lift in a spread eagle with a good attitude position for her and a nice change of position with him skating on one leg and her in a double stag with an arch
  • Good positions in the dance spin but not a lot of speed
Olson/Cowan: 43.72 TES + 40.42 PCS = 84.14 Total: 137.58 and into 1st place
  • They are skating to James Bond and are currently in 7th place
  • Really cool entry to their hydroblade curve lift with her in a nice stretched out haircutter position
  • Nice edges and flow across the ice in their step sequence with ease in their changes of holds and great details in the hands and upper body from her
  • Nice speed and ice coverage and decent unison on their twizzles
  • Cartwheel into a super fast rotational lift with her upside down and completely vertical and a nice flip exit
  • Really nice speed and positions throughout this dance spin
  • Gorgeous position from her in that straight line lift, standing on his blade and reaching a complete 180 split position and arching back
  • You can tell they're really using their edges to push them across teh ice in this step sequence
  • She is such a performer!
Cannuscio/McManus: 43.93 TES + 39.62 PCS = 83.55 Total: 137.37 and into 2nd place
  • They are currently in 6th place
  • I just love her posture out on the ice, even when she's just entering, she has her shoulders back and has a real presence on the ice
  • Nice one armed rotational lift with a change in height and a nice easy set down on the exit
  • Nice stretch through their legs in this step sequence, great ice coverage and nice matching lines with good changes in hold and unison
  • Nice dance spin with good change of rotation in the middle
  • They have great speed and transitions throughout this whole program
  • Nice straightline lift with him in a squat and her leaning back over the ice
  • Such nice use of her arms and upper body throughout this step sequence to really keep the character of this program
  • Curve lift with him in a spread eagle and two positions for her
  • Nice straight leg rotational twizzles going in opposite directions and they looked clean
  • Nice rotational lift with two positions for her and good speed
  • I love how they're hamming up this last piece of music
  • Really cool lift with her in a cradle and him swinging her around almost in a wave patter
Cannuscio/Lorello: 41.36 TES + 39.96 PCS -1.00 = 80.32 Total: 130.35 and into 3rd place
  • They are skating to Les Miserables and are currently in 10th place
  • Nice flip into an upside down position and finally laid over his leg
  • Good speed, flow and unison through the three sets of twizzles
  • Great speed through these transition steps
  • Nice almost flying entry into their dance spin with a good change of direction but not a lot of speed
  • Nice flow through their step sequence and nice details with their arm positions
  • Nice spread eagle curve lift with her held up at his head level and in a horizontal position
  • Nice spin right up into a one arm rotational lift
  • Nice edges and flow through this second step sequence
  • Leg over the head into a nice haircutter rotational lift
Samuelson/Gilles: 42.36 TES + 41.39 PCS -1.00 = 82.75 Total: 135.99 and into 3rd place
  • They are skating to Stairway to Heaven and are currently in 8th place
  • Nice positions in their camel spins with a nice sit position with good matching line and into a nice layback
  • I absolutely adore Emily's arabesque line and her toe point throughout this step sequence; nice big pattern for them with good flow
  • Flip up onto his shouler and two more changes of position ending with a double stag arched back position for her and a hydroblade for him
  • Nice speed and flow in this step sequence right into an interesting split lift in a rotational position
  • A little lack of unison on their twizzles but they are really selling this program with everything they have
  • Curve lift with her legs wrapped around his waist
  • I love this assisted walking move at the end of their program
  • Just noticed her gold fingernails to match her costume!
Lichtman/Copely: 40.23 TES + 37.44 PCS -1.00 = 76.67 Total: 129.22 and into 4th place
  • This color is really striking on her and on the ice.  I like the switch to red and yellow
  • I feel like they're just going thorugh some of the motions in their choreography and this is such a fun program and they could really sell it and make it a showstopper
  • Nice twsit into a straight line lfit with him leaing back and her facing him with an arched position
  • I really like his edges through the step sequence but they have a few places where their leg lines don't match up
  • Step up to a shoulder lift and an exit through standing on his boot
  • Cartwheel over his back into an arch with him in a spread eagle position
  • Nice position in the dance spin but not a lot of speed--I really like his camel with her arched over his back in the layback
  • Good unison through their second step sequence
  • Haircutter rotational lfit with her wrapped around his body
Chock/Bates: 44.79 TES + 44.80 PCS = 89.59 Total: 145.08 and into 1st place

  • Rotational lift with her up by his head and dropping into a nice split position
  • Good positions in the dance spin but not a lot of speed
  • Nice spin with her standing on his boot
Davis/White: 55.43 TES + 59.22 PCS = 114.65 Total: 191.54 and into 1st place
  • I love Meryl's free dance dress so much and I'm glad it hasn't changed all season
  • Such a wonderful opening and they draw you in from the first beat of the music
  • Twiste into an arched lift behind his head
  • Beautiful edge work with clean changes and nice use of the free arm from Meryl and changes in the head position for Charlie; nice matching leg lines and I love how long they hang on to their edges
  • Beautiful positions in the dance spin with a nice change of direction and good speed and flow out of the element
  • I love this transitional section after the music change--it feels like you're in a ballroom
  • Beautiful split rotaitonal lift with her on his shoulder on the music
  • He looked a little wild at the beginning of the twizzles but there was never a loss of unison or speed
  • Nice position on his legs and pressing right up to stand on his leg with Charlie in a spread eagle
  • They have the crowd clapping along going into their final step sequence and they are really selling this section while still maintaining all the technical quality

Shibutani/Shibutani: 52.78 TES + 54.45 PCS -1.00 = 106.23 Total: 178.84 and into 2nd place
  • Like the new outfits for them...this peach orange couple really complements them and stands out on the ice
  • Another opening that just commands your attention
  • Alex bobbles slightly on the third set of twizzles and they seem a little slower than normal; which are still some of the fastest twizzles
  • Front carthweel, back cartwheel into a nice rotational lift; lots of position changes in that one and they make it look so easy
  • Nice dance spin positions but on the slow side
  • Such deep edges and no ice spray on the edge changes with good changes of holds and nice use of the free arm from Maia
