Rostelecom Cup Pairs Short Program

This event begins at 7:35am EST.
The warmup group is on the ice.
Group 1
Cain/Reagan, USA: 26.12 TES + 22.91 PCS = 49.03
  • She's looking very elegant in a black dress with a necklace accent and even has a french manicure on her nails
  • Their small height dance makes them really interesting to watch since they have to work harder to hit the same elements but still make it look easy
  • Interesting choice to start with their step sequence done in hold with a lot of steps reminiscent of a dance team
  • Good side by side triple salchows
  • Nice hip lift with great positions from her and a nice flip exit--her height gives her a great advantage in the lift to create long lines
  • Good double twist but the landing could be cleaner
  • She steps out of the landing on the throw triple--she had a hesitation before picking in for the jump
  • Really low to the ice on the death spiral and not a lot of speed, he really has to muscle her up
  • Nice position in the pairs spin from her with a nice change of direction
Jones/Gaskell, CAN: 26.14 TES + 21.62 PCS = 47.76 and into 2nd place
  • He looks like he borrowed his costume from Paul Poirier
  • A little crashy on the landing of the triple twist
  • She's off in the air on the double axel and the landing isn't pretty but she hangs on to it
  • Nice one arm hold in the hip position with a switch to the other leg but she doesn't have much stretch through her air positions
  • Nice throw triple loop
  • Good arch in the death spiral
  • This step sequence seems to be a little on the labored side and they're skating very far apart
  • Not great positions in their pair spin with lots of bent legs and hiked hips
Gerboldt/Enbert, RUS: 24.14 TES + 24.26 PCS -1.00 = 47.30 and into 3rd place
  • Great speed from them in their opening moves
  • Really off on their side by side triples and she nearly goes into the boards
  • She came down really hard on triple twist
  • She fell on the throw triple
  • They need to be a little closer in the step sequence and have more speed
  • Nice positions in the lift with good stretch through her legs but she could still get more stretch
  • Very nice death spiral but no speed at the end
  • Good positions in the pair spin but no speed
Group 2
Stolbova/Klimov, RUS: 25.75 TES + 25.98 PCS = 51.73 and into 1st place
  • This is a lot of look from her with the silver lame sports bra, blue mesh dress and black tights
  • Double twist with the arms overhead and a clean catch
  • She ekes out the landing of the throw triple and manages to keep her free leg up
  • Good unison on the side by side triples
  • A loss of unison in some spots on the step sequence and although they're doing the same steps they don't always seem to match
  • Good haircutter position in the hip hold lift with a one arm hold
  • She's really twisted in this death spiral and almost laying on the ice
  • I don't like that she thinks opening her mouth wide for the majority of the program counts as performance quality
  • Decent speed through their pair spin
Berton/Hotarek, ITA: 32.67 TES + 27.46 PCS = 60.13 and into 1st place
  • Very solid opening side by side triple toes
  • A little bit of a crash landing on the double twist
  • Nice hip lift with a stomach hold variation
  • Solid throw triple loop
  • Good speed and positions in the pair spin with seamless changes of direction
  • Good distance between them on the step sequence with a nice section in hold
  • Good death spiral with a change of hold
  • Little bit of a wardrobe malfunction with her top coming down and showing her cup underneath
Kavaguti/Smirnov, RUS: 33.63 TES + 31.54 PCS = 65.17 and into 1st place
  • I really like her pale pink and ivory dress
  • This program really suits him
  • Solid side by side triples
  • Nice high triple twist but she crashes into him on the landing and they have to really fight to stay on their feet
  • Nice clean throw triple
  • Good unison, matching lines and distance between them on the step sequence but I'd like her to be more precise with her movements as sometimes she looks like she's flopping around
  • Really nice one arm lift into the stomach hold with her foot pulled up by her head
  • She's a little crooked, her head is on the ice and she holds her arm awkwardly waiting to be pulled up during the death spiral
  • Decent speed and positions through the pairs spin
Savchenko/Szolkowy, GER: 36.06 TES + 32.66 PCS = 68.72 and into 1st place
  • She squeaks out the landing on the throw triple flip and gets the free leg out
  • Really nice triple twist with a clean catch
  • Good unison on their side by side triple toes
  • Nice position in the lift but her legs could be squeezed tighter together in the stomach hold position
  • Nice speed in the pairs spin with good matching positions
  • Nice death spiral with a change of hold but a loss of speed at the end
  • Good distance between them on the step sequence but they don't get a lot of ice coverage through the middle section
